Defining Daughter of the Light

Hello friends, today I’m going to be sharing a bit about what Daughter of the Light is and my vision for it, as well as some changes that I’ll be making around here.

Why I Started DOTL

I started this blog at the end of 2018. My sister Jehosheba had already started one and she had been begging me to do the same. I was reluctant, but also secretly really interested. I was obsessed with my friend Amie’s blog, and I thought it would be really cool to have my own website. The promptings of my sister finally paid off and I started DOTL. I had absolutely no clue what I was doing. If you go back and look at some of my first posts, you’ll see what I mean. *sinks into a hole*

Behind the Name

If you know me, you know that I dread coming up with names for anything. If I ever become a mother, my husband’s going to have to name the kids, ’cause there’s no way I could come up with them. *laughs*

Naming my blog was a daunting task. Jehosheba and I had brainstorming sessions and came up with a whole list of ones that were pretty similar to DOTL. I ended up choosing Daughter of the Light for several reasons.

First of all, I’m a Christian, which means that I am a daughter of God. God is our light in this world. So the name fit that way. Also, to be honest, when I started my blog I was not in a great place mentally and it got worse over the next year. (Blogging was really a huge help to me, even though I didn’t talk much about my struggles. It just gave me something to be in control of, people who supported me and something that I could at least partially succeed at.) I wanted a name that would remind me that the world wasn’t all dark and that I wasn’t always going to be lost in that darkness. 🙂

So…What Is DOTL About?

Oh dear, this question. I cringe every time people mention the importance of having a niche and knowing who your audience is. I have that clearly with my secondary blog, An Inky Dream. But not here. I never have. And I fear I never will.

If you’re new to DOLT, you can expect to find a lot of randomness. (And yes, I see all of you people with perfect niches dying at that sentence). You’ll see photo dumps, Random Life Updates (once a month a do a review of what I did during that time), posts meant to encourage people in their faith, tags and awards, traveling/moving tips & tricks & stories, occasionally recipes (my family goes on a lot of diets/has food restrictions) and guest posts.

Yep. It’s a mix of random things, but I am hoping to refine it and get it less wild and random. 🙂 We’ll see, though.

My Vision for DOTL

^^ I already touched on this a bit. I want to move more towards encouraging tweens/teens/young adults (and anyone who’ll read this), in their walk with God. I’m very passionate about people with mental illness and I want to bring awareness to that subject. I also want to share tips and tricks for moving/traveling. My family has moved so many times and I’ve picked up a lot of helpful things over the years and I’d love to share those with you all!

Change Is Coming

*epic music begins to play* *is all I can hear after writing that subheading*

As you know, I’m trying to finish school as well as getting serious about driving (I put it off way too long), novel writing and plans for my future. I just don’t have the time I used to for blogging (especially now that I have two blogs), which means that DOTL gets posts that are sloppy and thrown together at the last second. Before you start to worry, I’m not quitting. I love blogging way too much to do that. But I’ll be adjusting my posting schedule so that I’ll actually have time to write quality posts for you all. 🙂

I also want to start a couple series (probably about mental health/illness, because that’s something that is always on my heart and I feel like it isn’t talked about enough in Christian circles), but we’ll see if I can actually make that idea a reality. 😉
