Lighting Up That Writers Nook Tag

HEY GUYS! It is a coolish, fall day and I just finished watching my brother make a tower out of playing cards. *grins* Now I hear my little sister wailing about her leg hurting (she was accidently hit in the leg by a brother who was trying to slide down a porch railing while holding a piece of wood….long story).

Anyway, I’m going to be doing the Lighting Up That Writers Nook Tag. I was super excited when Melody tagged me for this because I LOVE WRITING!! 🙂 😉 Be sure to check out her blog and give her a follow. 😉

I would say a backstory. Characters that lack backstory are bland and boring. XD I looove creating tragic or sad backstories for my antagonists because it helps me see why they’re against my protagonist and why they’re doing what they’re doing. Backstory is sooooo important!

The inhabitance. The people or whoever is living in the world. They make the stories happen. Food and plant life are also really fun, unique elements of different worlds. 🙂

I have struggled with plot structure for yeeears. It was really hard for me to figure out where everything should go, when I should introduce characters, etc., etc. Recently, I’ve followed the idea that Learning To Write The Novel Way laid out. Basically, I have to remember that everything is leading up to my final conflict.

I have a huge document on my computer titled “ideas”. It’s full of random ideas that come to mind. If I want to turn them into a story, I’ll write out the idea/plot on a new document. 🙂 XD

The Chronicles of Narnia and more recently the Lord of the Rings books have been inspiring. Although I’m not sure they’re considered “older” yet. XD

Also, the Iliad was a major major inspiration when it came to writing fight scenes. I LOVED the Iliad and it was amazing how so much battle could be so interesting. (And the poetry of it all…*melts* It was so beautiful and I am not a huge poetry fan!) AND HECTOR’S DEATH!!! *weeps* I have no words.

#1: Write every day. This has been SO helpful. Getting into a habit of writing everyday trains you to be diligent and to push through those hard seasons of writers block!

#2: Read a lot. Learn from other’s writings. Don’t copy, but learn.

(Melody, you took the words from my fingers. XD) Mushy, gushy, pointless romance. I mean, seriously?! It is incredibly annoying when characters fall in love and it doesn’t help the story in any way at all.

Um, for a while I was writing about modern American families because I had a really hard time writing about a culture that I had not experienced first hand. Now that I’m more into fantasy, I am creating my own cultures with legends, rituals and food. Of course they are influenced by my American culture because that’s all that I’ve ever known.

Kombucha!!! Tea. Coffee. Water. XD Gum. Cinnamon sticks.

Lol. If there is any food or drink in my reach when I’m frustrated with my writing, it’ll be gone before I can even think about or taste it. XD So I try to avoid having anything near me when my stories aren’t working. XD

I LOVE music but if it has words, I get distracted. XD But I love Celtic songs (most are so upbeat), the Lord of the Rings soundtrack, most songs by The Piano Guys and instrumental songs by Sleeping At Last. Music is a huge help for me when I’m writing, because I can block out the rest of the noise and focus.

Ahhh!!! Don’t get me started! It would be a very small room or space with a warm light, a cup of hot tea or kombucha and a comfortable chair and a blanket. It’d be filled with peaceful, sad or thrilling music (depending on what I’m writing, lol). Ahhh. I can dream. XD
