Traveling Tips For Kids

Normally, we travel a lot for the holidays. We drive to Iowa and spend Thanksgiving and Christmas with grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins! It is always the best! Over the years, I’ve come to enjoy the long drives but when I was younger, I just thought they were boring. πŸ˜› (I’m guessing that there are very few little kids who enjoy spending hours sitting in the car.)

With the holidays coming up, here are some fun ideas to keep kids happy during the extended driving time! πŸ™‚

#1 – Audios

This is a lifesaver in our car, people. It’s amazing how fast everyone calms down as soon as we play an audio! Some great audio drams that I’ve come to enjoy are:

  • AIO. I LOOOVE Adventures in Odyssey so much! πŸ˜› I’ve listened to it since I was, like eight. Even though I’ve heard the episodes a million times already, it’s always fun to go back and listen to them again! (BUT THEY’RE ABOUT TO RELEASE A NEW ALBUM!) Right now, we have the AIO Club membership which let’s us have access to all the episodes. Before we had that, we would listen here.
  • Keys For Kids Radio. We discovered this somewhere in 2013, I believe. It has several fun kids programs that you can listen to on demand. They air The Pond, Red Rock Mysteries, Down Gilead Lane, Paws and Tales, Kids Corner, We ids and Karen & Kids. Each Saturday they give out a new episode. πŸ™‚
  • Lamplighter Theatre. I love these audios!! They’re audio versions of old books and they’re so much fun! We own several of them. πŸ™‚
  • Radio Theatre. It depends on the audio, but generally, I enjoy Radio Theatre. πŸ™‚ Some of my favorites by them are The Legend of Squanto, The Magicians Nephew, The Last Battle, (all of the Narnia audios, actually!), Les Miserables, At The Back Of The North Wind, Bonhoeffer (THAT WAS SO SAD), Anne of Green Gables and Silas Marner.

#2 – Snacks

Food has amazing powers. πŸ˜‰ Giving snacks as rewards for good behavior is a great idea! (Like, if the kid behaves well for 30 minutes, he can have such and such treat.) And hungry kids are often GRUMPY kids.

#3 – “Scavenger Hunts”

Jehosheba used to write down lists of things for Nahum & Baruch to find (as we drove past them) and then she’d give them a time limit and if they found all the things on her list, she’d give them a prize! It was fun and it kept the boys occupied for a while. An example of the list is:

  • Spot five flying birds
  • Find ten signs with the letter P
  • Find the letters of the alphabet on license plates
  • Spot ten trees
  • Find the shape of a flying pig in the clouds
  • Find a bug

#4 – Books

Ah books! My dear pals. πŸ™‚ Little kids who can’t read yet can always look at picture books. New readers can enjoy easier books (when I was little, I loved the Little Jewel books and would always take them on trips). And of course older kids can read harder books. πŸ™‚ (Like, say, Les Miserables. :P)

#5 – Toys

Have kids pack their own toys! It can entertain them for a while. And giving them a surprise bag of toys can extend the fun for a while! πŸ™‚

  1. When I was little, I loved road trips and was mostly occupied by memorizing and quizzing state capitals as well as watching A Bug’s Life and reading books 😁 Love the scavenger hunt suggestion!

  2. Thanks for the tips! While we don’t travel often, we do take some day trips where the ride is a little hard for the younger ones. Especially if the destination is super exciting. And listening to AIO is a tradition with us! Lol. And books . . . books are a great resource for road trips. Well, unless reading in the car makes you sick (like it does with a couple of my sibs). And playing I Spy is fun too. Unless you drive by the thing that you were spying . . .

      1. I really love The Green Ring Conspiracy episodes! They’re a family favorite! πŸ˜‰ But I tend to lean more towards the mystery ones. (claps) Though just in general, I like ’em all. What are your favorites?

  3. Great ideas! We have on the Back of the North Wind and a lot of AIO audios also! My daughter listens to the podcasts almost every day.
The scavenger hunt sounds great! We used to do the letters on signs and also to see how many states we could find on license plates. I think the states were harder.

That’s so cool! I haven’t listened to a lot of the podcasts, but I enjoyed the ones that I heard. πŸ™‚
Oooh that’s a fun idea! I should have my brothers try it when they’re “dying of boredom”. πŸ™‚

  4. Awesome post, Hattush! And we thought we were the only ones who listened to Kid’s Corner!!! XD (Not really, but you guys are the only ones we know who listen to it, that we know of! XD) Do you listen to it from the actual website, or from the Keys for Kids website? Cause the Keys for Kids website only has one on a week, but on the actual website, you can see them all. πŸ™‚ Which episode is your favorite? And who’s your fav character? ;P
